Niall appeared in the fourth season of “When Calls the Heart” as single father Shane Cantrell, which aired in 2017.
The show was developed from a 2013 original Hallmark movie of the same name, itself developed from the novel by Janette Oke. It was overhauled, with a mainly new cast, into a television series in 2014 and completed its fourth season, which aired on the Hallmark Channel, in 2017.
The series follows a Canadian community in the early 1900’s, struggling to overcome the challenges of establishing their town under often difficult circumstances. It focuses primarily on teacher Elizabeth Thatcher (Erin Krakow), and her beau, Canadian Mountie Jack Thornton (Daniel Lissing).
The show has developed a loyal fanbase (dubbed ‘Hearties’) who appreciate its focus on personal relationships and family values.
Niall played single father to Philip (fantastically portrayed by young Liam Hughes), struggling to cope with the loss of his wife some years previously during childbirth, and dealing with the resulting strained relationship with his son. Throughout the season he not only began to develop his relationship with his son, but also began to open himself up to new friendships, and possibilities, within the town. As well as a friendship with Elizabeth Thatcher, he also began to develop a romantic relationship with nurse Faith Carter (Andrea Brooks).
Niall gave an interview in early 2017 to Christy Spratlin at TV Junkies , discussing his role in the show and other projects. Niall Matter Interview – Christy Spratlin (TV Junkies)
