Niall played the role of Zane Donovan in the Syfy original series “Eureka” from seasons 2 – 5, the show’s final season. Initially a recurring role, he became a member of the main cast from season 4 onwards.
“Eureka” was centered on the small town of Eureka, Oregon, which housed some of the most brilliant scientists of the day, conducting experimental research funded by the US Department of Defense through a corporation called Global Dynamics. In the first episode, US Marshal Jack Carter (Colin Ferguson) stumbles upon the town, becoming involved in the sometimes mysterious and bizarre goings on, and ends up being appointed the town sheriff.
The character of Zane was introduced in the season 2 episode “E=MC…“, as a brilliant but rebellious young scientist, who is brought to the town as an alternative to prison after being arrested for hacking into government databases. After a rocky start, he soon settles into the town, and develops a romantic relationship with Deputy Sheriff Jo Lupo (Erica Cerra).
Trivia: Niall was a troublesome teen himself, until his parents took extreme measures by sending him, age 17, to work with his grandfather on the oil rigs.
Following the season 4 premiere, in which five of the town’s residents (Jack Carter, Jo Lupo, Dr. Henry Deacon (Joe Morton), Dr. Alison Blake (Salli Richardson-Whitfield) and Dr. Douglas Fargo (Neil Grayston)) are transported back in time, then back to an altered present-day reality, Zane and Jo’s relationship is erased from the timeline, with Zane having no memory of it. The season sees the pair struggle to come to terms with, and define, their complex relationship as well as the growth of Zane as a character as he strives to be seen as more than a former felon.
